The Old Fashioned is often considered to be the first modern cocktail, and from the first, it proved to be a remarkably adaptable drink. Conceived for rye whiskey, and adapting to bourbon when rye fell out of fashion, it is in fact a great way to showcase any excellent spirit. Not only can the rye or bourbon version be varied by changing the bitters or garnishes, but rum, tequila, and Scotch versions now appear regularly on cocktail menus. So open your cupboard and your imagination; all it takes is a spirit, a bit of sweetener, some bitters, and an appropriate garnish.
