Mulled Wine


The classic warming winter beverage.    
 

          1 litre red wine
          3 cinnamon sticks
          1 large knob of ginger, peeled
          1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg
          12 cloves
          6 allspice berries
          1/4 cup sugar
          Scotch or brandy for the cup
          cinnamon stick for garnish

 
Combine all ingredients except for the liquor in saucepan. Bring just to boiling, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for one hour. Serve in mugs with a shot of strengthening liquor to taste, garnished with a cinnamon stick.
